Ignore haters

I had a go at painting some watercolour lips. It took some patience, but turned out ok!

I get tired of reading through design inspiration sites where they post some project they think is awesome, but most of the comments just whinge about how it's not innovative or creative enough to post about. So here's some wise words I found on Swiss Miss...

I always take more pleasure in liking something than in disliking something. That’s not to say there aren’t some things that deserve to be liked and some things that deserved to be disliked, but I’m never fond of disliking something.
The lesson I’ve learned is to be wary of those who are. The ones who seem to think that being critical is the same as having good taste. Those people almost never have good taste, so their opinions don’t matter.
There’s no particular sophistication required to be a critic. We know this, because children often dislike foods they learn to love as adults.
So, even if what you’ve done isn’t so great, just remember that those who can’t say so with grace, those who seem to take pride in criticizing you, their opinions don’t matter. It may very well be that you’ve created a masterpiece, and they’re just children.
If you can learn to be a fair judge of yourself, you won’t feel the need to rely on other people’s opinions.

  1. You are completely right! I find more energy in the positive than the negative in anything in life. And further, why would you follow someone's art blog if all you do is criticize their work? As I always ask my critics: How would you do it better? And usually, I don't get a real response. :) Love those lips by the way.

  2. Thank you! Yes, even when I read news articles about musicians and bands, there will always be some dumb comment like 'I hate their work.' Why bother reading the story, then?

Also, I find that the best artists don't waste time being critical of others work, it's only the people who feel inferior that make negative comments.

  3. The lips are cool, good effort!

I definitely agree with the sentiment of the article. I think every work has its merit! I think people find it easy to pick a piece apart because they're just looking at the final result. They sometimes miss the fact that there was a process to get there, the hours spent getting to that stage. Well, at least that's what I've experienced with doing design work!

  4. Yes, exactly... the designer has spent time working with the client, doing research, development, etc, then someone with limited knowledge of the project writes some obnoxious comment. And they never reveal their real name or website link either.

It's never happened to me, but there's certain design websites I read that always feature cynical commments under the posts.
